Free the Robots (Chris Alfaro), a prodigy of the LA beat scene, has come face to face with his Filipino roots in this tribal beat project.As the title “Datu” (Filipino tribal chief) suggests, this is a folkloric sonic epic that reconnects ancestral memories and modern sound technology through beatmaking. Roots materials such as chants, folk percussion, and field instruments intersect with analog synths and heavy breakbeats. The psychedelic and ritualistic soundscape creates a listening experience that moves freely between past and present. This is an aggressive masterpiece of spiritual beats as a resampling of cultural memory, a “reconstruction of the self”.
