2001年発表、Gorillaz のセルフタイトル作『Gorillaz』。プロデューサーに Dan the Automator を迎え、ダブを基調にヒップホップやラテン、ポストパンクの要素を緩やかに接続したサウンドが全編を貫く。Clint Eastwood や 19-2000 に象徴されるミニマルなビートと浮遊感のあるメロディ、そしてラッパー Del the Funky Homosapien や Ibrahim Ferrer ら多彩なゲストの参加によって、作品は一種の“寄せ集め”でありながら不思議な統一感を獲得しています。ローファイで乾いた質感、どこか無機質で都市的なムードが全体に漂い、ポップでありながら距離感のある響きが印象的。バーチャル・バンドという枠組みを音楽的にも機能させた、プロジェクトの出発点にして重要作。

Released in 2001, Gorillaz’s self-titled album 『Gorillaz』. With Dan the Automator at the helm, the album is characterized by a sound that seamlessly blends dub with elements of hip-hop, Latin music, and post-punk. With minimalist beats and ethereal melodies—symbolized by tracks like “Clint Eastwood” and “19-2000”—and the participation of diverse guests such as rapper Del the Funky Homosapien and Ibrahim Ferrer, the album achieves a strange sense of unity despite being a sort of “mishmash.” A lo-fi, dry texture and a somewhat inorganic, urban mood pervade the entire work, creating a striking sound that is pop yet maintains a sense of distance. This is the project’s starting point and a seminal work that successfully made the “virtual band” framework function musically.
