70から80年代にかけてエチオピアでFunk / JazzバンドであるThe Waliasのひとりとして活躍した伝説的キーボーディスト、Hailu Mergiaがその名の通り、アフリカ各国の音源を中心にリリースするAWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICAより2018年に発表したアルバム『Lala Belu』が入荷いたしました！

AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICAが彼の作品を発掘し、タクシー運転手をしながら作曲を行っていたHailu Mergiaの20年以上ぶりとなったこのアルバムは、いずれも名曲揃いで彼のセンスの健在さを証明しています。特にA3『Gum Gum』はブレイクとも言えるようなドラムの上で見事なキーボード捌きを見せており、エチオピアン・グルーヴを世界へと再提示しています！

We’ve just received the 2018 album *Lala Belu* by legendary keyboardist Hailu Mergia—a member of the Ethiopian funk/jazz band The Walias during the 1970s and 1980s—released by AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICA, a label that, as its name suggests, specializes in music from across the African continent!

AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICA unearthed his work, and this album—Hailu Mergia’s first in over 20 years, created while he was working as a taxi driver—is packed with masterpieces that prove his talent is as sharp as ever. In particular, track A3, “Gum Gum,” showcases his brilliant keyboard work over a drum beat that could be called a “break,” reintroducing the Ethiopian groove to the world!
