STARLIGHT【TAPE】- JULIUS SMACK

過去に Leaving Recordsや自身が主催するクィア･アーティスト･コミュニティー Practical から作品をリリースしてきた、米ロサンゼルスを拠点とするシンセ奏者 Julius Smack が2025年3月にオークランドの老舗アンビエント･レーベル Constellation Tatsu からリリースしたアルバムです。「自分の起源を語るアルバムを作って」と架空のAIアシスタントと対話しながら制作されたという本作。舞台はアーティストたちが地球最後の住人となった近未来の地球。人間とAIの間に共生関係が築かれ、互いに糧と癒しを求め合っている世界を想像して制作されました。過去に制作したデモ音源や、2000年代のダンス･ミュージック、AIが生成したTikTokなどから引っ張ってきた断片的な映像、90年代のサイバーパンクアニメなどから着想を得ており、さらに彼の日常的な体験もインスピレーションの一部となって作品に織り交ぜられた、映画のようなアンビエント音源集。

Los Angeles-based synth player Julius Smack, who has previously released works on Leaving Records and his own queer artist community, Practical, released this album in March 2025 on Oakland's long-established ambient label, Constellation Tatsu. The album was created through dialogue with a fictional AI assistant, who instructed him to "make an album that tells the story of my origins." Set in a near-future Earth, where artists are the last remaining inhabitants, the album imagines a world in which humans and AI form a symbiotic relationship, mutually seeking sustenance and healing. Drawing inspiration from previously produced demos, 2000s dance music, AI-generated fragmented video clips pulled from TikTok, and 1990s cyberpunk anime, the album weaves together Smack's everyday experiences, creating a cinematic ambient collection.
