Maurice Malik King was a multi-reed player active in the St. Louis jazz scene during the 1970s and 80s. His only album—originally self-released in 1983 under the name "Malik's Emerging Force Arts Trio"—has now been reissued by the UK-based free jazz archival label Moved By Sound! Eschewing the standard saxophone/piano/bass/drums lineup, the group performs as an unconventional trio featuring alto sax (and vocals), congas (and percussion), and bass (and violin). They weave a deep, spiritual, and ritualistic soundscape where hypnotic conga beats and earth-shaking bass lines intertwine with avant-garde saxophone playing that lays bare raw emotion.
