"ファドの女王"アマリア・ロドリゲスが台頭する以前の、リスボンとコインブラに伝わる最も初期のスターたちが集結。ファドの音楽性は、ギリシャのレベチカ、アメリカのブルース、アルゼンチンやウルグアイの労働者階級のタンゴ音楽と似ているが、その特徴を際立たせているのは、抗議や抵抗というよりも、むしろ人生の苦しみを冷静に受け入れているということだろう。

A collection of “spine-tingling” Fado recordings from the mid-1910s through the 1930s is now available from UK-based Death Is Not The End.

The collection brings together some of the earliest stars of Lisbon and Coimbra, before the rise of Amalia Rodriguez, the "Queen of Fado. Fado's musicality is similar to that of Greek rebetica, American blues, and working-class tango music of Argentina and Uruguay, but what distinguishes it is its calm acceptance of life's suffering rather than its protest or resistance.
